Isle of Raasay Distillery is the only distillery on the island of Raasay, part of the Hebridean Islands off the west coast of Scotland. It is a new distillery that began distillation in 2017.
This single malt whisky is bottled from a single cask that was specially reserved for TIR (Tendered Invasion)*, a cask that is kept secret within Raasay.
This whisky is crafted using Campbeltown and Orkney malts and features Dutch oak, a cask that is little known in the industry. It is non-chill filtered and non-coloured.
(Tasting notes)
Aroma: Strawberry compote, damp earth, apricots, prunes / Taste: Strawberry compote, reduced wine, lightly roasted coffee, ripe apricots, withered sherry / Finish: The essence of ripe Nyoho grapes and the accompanying bitterness lingers for a long time, and over time a taste reminiscent of a seasoned old sherry also emerges.
*TIR/Ladder: Tsuyoshi Kitakaji, Shamrock: Hidetoshi Maekawa, and Kimura: Takuhei Kimura are three members of the same generation who are working to bring a breath of fresh air to the Japanese whiskey scene.
