Mortlach was the first distillery established in Dufftown, the heart of Speyside. Nicknamed "The Beast of Dufftown" for its overwhelmingly powerful flavor, Mortlach is known for its deep aroma and rich, deep flavor, which is said to be unparalleled in whiskey, despite its subtle smoky character.
This flavor is the result of a unique and complex distillation process that experts describe as 2.81 distillations, involving six stills of different sizes and an intricate network of lyne arms.
<Tasting notes>
Nose: Rich and deep. A harmonious blend of sandalwood and oak. Light spices, burnt toffee and red berries.
Taste: Sweet and spicy. Medium to full-bodied on the palate. Brown sugar, dark chocolate, cherry jam, a touch of tobacco. Traditional Mortlach meatiness.
Finish: Smooth, dry, bitter plum.
Drinking suggestion: Adding water brings out the sweetness and the distillery's original character.
