Octomore has been legendary among enthusiasts since its release as the world's most heavily peated single malt. This Octomore 13.2 is a single malt from Bruichladdich Distillery, made with 100% Scottish barley peated to an exceptionally high phenol content of 137.3 ppm. The whisky is aged for five years in Fernando de Castilla Oloroso sherry casks in Jerez, Spain. It is non-chill filtered and non-colored.
These casks are not simply scented casks, but were actually used to store sherry, which is produced under the same philosophy as Bruichladdich Distillery: whisky that puts quality, craftsmanship and flavour first.
Speaking specifically about the impact on Octomore 13.2, Head Distiller Adam Hannett explained, "The fact that it was matured entirely in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks has had a wonderful impact on 13.2. Combined with the fact that it was matured in dunnage warehouses in the village of Port Charlotte, the interplay between the character of the sherry casks and the slow maturation at low temperatures brings out the sharp saltiness of the spirit, and the nuts of the Oloroso sherry and the dried fruit of the citrus orange amazingly enhance the smokiness and vitality of Octomore."
