Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest village in the Côte de Nuits region, with nine Grand Cru vineyards, and is equally popular with Vosne-Romanée in the Nuits region. It is known for its mellow, powerful and masculine wines.
Claude Dugas, located on the outskirts of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, uses the Cellier des Dimes, a medieval storage facility for crops paid as tax by villagers, as his cellar, where wines sought after by wine enthusiasts around the world lie. The estate owns and leases a total of six hectares. Even the village-named Gevrey-Chambertin boasts complexity and concentration on a par with first-growth wines. Griotte, Charmes, and Chapelle-Chambertin, made from only one or two barrels, are rare to see, but these divine wines will change your perspective on wine once you taste them.
The richness and power, hidden within its delicate character, are born from the small grapes harvested in low yields, thanks to efforts to achieve high quality, such as horse-drawn plowing and early adoption of organic farming. The winemaking process is simple, with no cold soaking or temperature control, which have become commonplace. "The work in the fields determines all the quality. We stopped spreading fertilizer in 1986. A good harvest of grapes determines everything." The winery began bottling its own wine in 1977, during the time of his father, Maurice, and began bottling under the name Claude Dugas in 1991.
2021 was a tougher year for grapes in Burgundy than expected, with diseases and other issues. A warm winter allowed buds to begin to appear, followed by frost damage in early April, a large hailstorm in June, and the lowest yield in 44 years. However, the grapes that survived these conditions were of impeccable quality in terms of aroma and sugar content, and despite the low yield, there are high hopes that this will be a great vintage.
