The Rougeot family has been producing wine in Meursault for five generations. Their vineyards are located in or near Meursault. While their small annual production of just 25,000 bottles has kept them relatively unknown, they are a truly acclaimed domaine, producing wines considered "super-regional." Most of the vines were planted by Pierre-Henri Rougeot's grandfather in the late 1950s (partially replanted by his father in the early 1980s). Since Pierre-Henri returned to the domaine in 2010, they have practiced organic farming, and the 2018 vintage was officially certified organic. Their organic farming practices include actively reducing sulfur and copper in the vineyards. They have never used herbicides in the vineyards, and discontinued all pesticide use in 2012. Through careful attention and precise management, the need for sulfites has been minimized through the removal of pesticides from the vineyards, the reduction of sulfur and copper levels, and careful selection, and since 2016 sulfites have only been used at bottling (although some cuvées are being produced without added sulfites throughout the entire process).
The white wines are whole-cluster pressed with air pressure, then left to rest in tanks for 1-2 days before being fermented in traditional 228L barrels with wild yeast. After 12-18 months of ageing without adding any SO2, the wines are collected in tanks, left to rest for a month, then lightly filtered and bottled. A small amount of SO2 is added to the white wines only at bottling.
The red wine grapes are rigorously selected, crushed whole bunches, and fermented with natural yeast. Most are macerated in concrete tanks or wooden vats for 15-18 days, with one or two pump-overs per day. The wine is aged for 12-18 months on high-quality lees in traditional 228L barrels without added sulfur, then collected in tanks and left to rest for one month before bottling. A very small amount of SO2 is added to the red wines at bottling.
(Tasting Comments) Aromas of white acacia flowers, fresh almonds, and a hint of citrus. A wine with excellent texture and a rounded body. Would you consider it as an upscale everyday wine? A very good bottle for a regional class wine.
